Green Silk 1870s Dress

This weekend, my mother Nancy wore her new olive green silk 1870s dress at Wheatland, home of President James Buchanan. I designed the dress for her, we worked together to create the patterns, and she did the sewing. I was inspired by the lovely purple dress in the BBC movie 'Daniel Deronda'. I'm very pleased with the way it turned out.
The bustle and petticoat worn under the dress were created using Truly Victorian patterns.

1870s Dress Question

Question: Which black trim do you like better at the back of this 1870s dress - larger or smaller?

My mother is making this lovely 1870s dress to wear this weekend. We had planned to put the larger trim at the back of the bodice, bustle of the skirt, and then continue it between rows two double rows of black velvet trim at the bottom of the skirt. Do you like the larger or smaller trim?

I would greatly appreciate your opinion!

I promise to show more pictures of the dress after this weekend!

Daniel Deronda Purple Dress

I have long adored the purple dress on the BBC movie 'Daniel Deronda'. In fact, there are very few costumes in that movie that I don't absolutely adore and wish that I owned. My mother is making an 1870s dress to wear at the Christmas Candlelight Tours at Wheatland, so I thought that I'd post some of the inspiration photos for that dress. Since I'm short on time, I did most of the research for inspiration while watching movies with period costumes. My favorite costumes were from 'Daniel Deronda' and 'The Way We Live Now'. I had 20 yards of olive green silk and lots of black velvet trim in my fabric stash, so we decided to use that for the dress and trim. My first choice would have been a jewel tone color, but since we already had that silk I thought it would be better to use that than purchase more. I'm going to post a few notes about the pictures so that my mother can work from these images to alter the pattern and make the dress.
Above, you can see that the bodice is open in the front below the waist.

A lovely 'V' neckline trimmed with black trim that continues down the center front of the bodice. The same trim is also around the edge of the sleeves.

I love how the back of her skirt is pleated. Isn't it stunning?

She's wearing white lace undersleeves with white lace trim around the neckline and sleeve openings.

I like how the sleeves are open in the back and the white pleated lace trims the edges.

Newport Paintings

"Going to the Opera" by Seymour Joseph Guy
Early 1870s

"Elizabeth W. Drexel Lehr" by Giovanni Boldini

This week I'm on a vacation with my parents in Rhode Island, exploring the wonderful old mansions of Newport and the beautiful sea treasures along the rocky beaches near our house. I saw these great paintings - one a reproduction, the other an original - at the Newport mansions I toured and thought you might like them, too.

Sadly, this was the largest image that I could find of "Going to the Opera" - the dresses really were quite lovely when viewed in more detail.

I love the movement of the fabric in Boldini's representation of Elizabeth Drexel Lehr. Isn't it great?
